Most cabinets in central Mississippi are built on site by trim
carpenters today. Sometimes you get quality cabinets but more often than not you don't. Trim carpenters build on-site cabinets
based on the square footage of your house.
Whether you have a 5000 square foot home or a 1000 square foot home you
are likely to see the same quality cabinets in both. Trim carpenters use plywood for face frames because they are building
your cabinets at your house. They can't bring a true face frame clamping table and a jointer and belt sander and planer to
the jobsite. Plywood face frames are the lowest quality you can buy and almost no other region in the country does this.
Do
you get what you paid for? No. The national average value for your cabinets should represent 10 to 15 percent of the total
home value. So, accordingly, a $200,000 dollar house should have $20,000 to $30,000 worth of cabinets in them. The highest
paid trim carpenters get 4.00 per square foot to trim a house not including the cost of the plywood. Using these numbers,
a 2000 sq ft. house would cost the builder $8,000.00 and probably another $2000.00 in materials. You paid for $20,000 but
got $10,000 in cabinets. More than likely, on smaller homes, your trim carpenter charged around $2.50 per square foot.
You
should never see a nail hole on the outside of your cabinets.
You should have adjustable shelves.
You should
never see the "end grain" of the wood on your cabinets.
You should never have plywood for a face frame.
